Following the adoption of ECOWAP/CAADP in January 2005 and considering the shortcomings of existing information systems in the countries, ECOWAS decided, in collaboration with partner institutions, to establish an integrated information system for the agricultural sector called "ECOAGRIS." The purpose of ECOAGRIS is to enable decision-makers to have and use reliable data, information, and analyses to: (i) formulate and monitor agricultural development policies and strategies, (ii) better manage food security issues in West Africa, and (iii) promote trade in agri-food products.
The pilot phase of ECOAGRIS (October 2010 – August 2013) was implemented through the EU-IFAD-ECOWAS Food Facility Programme. This programme received funding from the European Union in December 2008. This first phase involved seven (7) West African countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, Niger, and Senegal.
