Agricultural markets

In the region, agricultural markets are monitored through national market information systems (SIMs), joint market assessment missions, etc.

Market Information Systems (MIS) play a key role in food security at the national and regional levels. Emerging after the liberalization of economies in the 1980s, these structures aim to improve market functioning by providing useful information to producers, traders, consumers, and decision-makers. They facilitate the movement of grain, strengthen the bargaining power of stakeholders, and support public policies through the regular dissemination of market data and analysis.

The joint mission was created after the 2005 food crisis to improve market information gathering. In 2006, a one-off initiative was launched to encourage MIS to collect this data on an ongoing basis. The results make it possible to anticipate crises and better understand markets mid-crop season.
